Job Summary:

The Director of College Counseling will oversee all aspects of the college counseling program, working closely with students, families, faculty, and college admissions representatives. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, knowledgeable, and compassionate leader who can provide strategic direction and individualized support to students in their college search and application process.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive college counseling program that supports students in identifying and achieving their postsecondary goals.
  • Provide one-on-one and group counseling to students and families throughout the college admissions process, including course selection, standardized testing, essay writing, and interview preparation.
  • Maintain strong relationships with college and university admissions offices to advocate for Emery/Weiner students.
  • Guide students in developing balanced and strategic college lists.
  • Educate students and families on the nuances of the college admissions landscape, including financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
  • Plan and execute college counseling events, including information sessions, college fairs, and visits from college representatives.
  • Work closely with faculty and administration to ensure students’ academic and extracurricular experiences align with their post-secondary aspirations.
  • Stay current with trends and changes in college admissions and communicate relevant updates to the school community.
  • Write compelling and personalized letters of recommendation for students.
  • Maintain and utilize relevant college counseling technology.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications Sought:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in counseling, education, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in college counseling, either in an independent school setting or in college admissions.
  • Deep knowledge of the college admissions landscape, including selective college admissions.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • A student-focused and empathetic approach, with the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of students and families.
