The Emery/Weiner School seeks a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative Associate Director of College Counseling to join our College Counseling Department. Responsibilities for this position include providing comprehensive college counseling services to Upper School students; building strong relationships with students, parents, and colleges/universities; collaborating on student and parent programming; and managing all aspects of students’ college application processes. Additional responsibilities include participation in student life (e.g. club sponsorship), supervisory duties, and school trip chaperoning/facilitation according to the experience of the candidate and needs of the school. 

 

A strong candidate will have a minimum of five to seven years of college counseling experience and a desire to work in a progressive, student-centered independent school that values kindness, honesty, and hard work. An outstanding candidate will demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, close attention to detail, and strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating conversations with students and parents about the college admissions process; 
  • Assessing students’ academic progress to meet requirements of specific colleges and college programs;
  • Communicating with college admissions and financial aid departments;
  • Maintaining and managing the duties associated with a rigorous timeline of counseling events;
  • Organizing and facilitating individual college planning meetings for juniors and their parents;
  • Participating in all grade-level college counseling student/parent meetings;
  • Coordinating, scheduling, and hosting college admissions representatives’ campus visits;
  • Supporting students in the college planning process via MaiaLearning software;
  • Meeting with seniors as needed to create and finalize college lists, review essays, proofread/edit applications and résumés, etc.;
  • Writing and editing counselor recommendation letters;
  • Co-leading College Counseling workshops for juniors and seniors;
  • Serving as advisor to a small cohort of students;
  • Attending national and regional conferences as part of ongoing professional development;
  • Visiting college campuses to stay updated about college entrance requirements;
  • Maintaining working relationships with various colleges and universities;
  • Contributing to the life of the school outside the classroom.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • 2-3 years of excellence in college counseling or in selective college admissions;
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills;
  • Unusually strong listening skills;
  • Enthusiasm for a team-centered approach to work; 
  • A strong commitment to professional growth.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of proven success in college counseling or selective college admissions;
  • Experience working in independent schools.
